NOBLE Team, a Spartan-III fireteam, discover the Covenant on Reach.  This starts the battle of Reach, which ultimately ends in the loss of the entire planet and the deaths of millions of civilians.  In the ensuing conflict, all members of NOBLE are killed in action with the exception of one.  The actions of NOBLE Team during the Fall of Reach are responsible for safely transporting Cortana to the Pillar of Autumn and allowing passage of the ship off-world.

While the actions of NOBLE Team were heroic, and by all accounts incredible, their actions were still not enough to turn the tide of the battle of Reach.  Like many battles, while the UNSC was able to win on the ground, the naval battle in orbit was an utter loss.  Without orbital and aerial superiority, the Covenant forces were able to overwhelm the planetary defenses and glass the planet.  NOBLE Team was still able to succeed in the missions they were tasked with, however, destroying the Covenant supercarrier Long Night of Solace and delivering Cortana to the Pillar of Autumn.
